Exercise for Stress & Anxiety

Now more than ever we need to be prioritising and protecting our health. The COVID Pandemic has stopped the world in its tracks, and it has disturbed not just our physical health but also our mental wellbeing.

Forced isolation, limitations on gatherings, separation from loved ones, closure of health facilities and working from home are contributing to an overwhelming emotional burden that we have experienced like never before. What we considered normal is now a thing of the past and it can be challenging trying to create new routines and find happiness in these unusual circumstances.

At times, it is easy to feel that negativity has gotten the better of us. So how can we manage our stress, anxiety, and health during this time of uncertainty?

One proven way is through exercise. The physical benefits are enormous as it can reduce the risk of, or help manage, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD), maintain and/or improve blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels and contribute to our overall health and wellbeing.

The benefits stretch much further than just the physical realm.  Exercise is considered vital for maintaining mental fitness, as it can help you emotionally relieve stress and anxiety. Scientists have found that regular participation in aerobic exercise has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve self-esteem. About five minutes of aerobic exercise can begin to stimulate anti-anxiety effects.

Studies show that exercise is highly effective at reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and at enhancing overall cognitive function.
